HH No. 29 continues where No. 28 left off . The intent is to permit the reader to share our experience in seeking a web site that would permit the user to bet via his/her computer, and yet enjoy (?) most of the amenities of an OTB. The focus of the search at this point is YOUBET.COM. Our second step after reading the organizations FAQs information, which we printed out from the web, was to telephone their 800 number and request the advertised free demo CD. It arrived quickly along with instructions for making cash deposits and withdrawals. The demo offered a 3-part menu, (Demo, Install, Quit) the first provided an actual demonstration that included a sample program (Hawthorne) odds, late changes, etc. It also showed the running of a race. I ran into one small problem. At a certain point I was stopped dead and couldnt figure out why. It turned out that I had to get the sample program before continuing. I either missed these instructions or they didnt exist. The demo, however, was pretty convincing and seemed to cover all pertinent points including late-odds changes, amounts bet, receipts, betting summaries, and so forth. Unfortunately some of the reading matter was so small and the screen changed so quickly that it was difficult for an old codger like me to absorb it all. Another complaint was that when I came to the signing up portion of menu, and after filling out a detailed, and lengthy form, I was advised I had made an error, but failed to tell what the error was. After several frustrating additional attempts, it took another phone call to clarify the situation.. On several other sites I have used the same letters and numbers for "user" and for the password i.e., "John Jones & John Jones." Youbet.com wanted two distinct names but failed to state this, or -if they did - I missed it. Once this little problem got resolved , my next step was to go to the previously printed out FAQs sheet. I looked under the heading, "How do I open a wagering account?" I was advised there was no minimum balance required, but $50 was recommended to open an account, and that once your membership application is accepted the wagering account is opened within 10 business days. It turned out that the 10 days applied if money order or check was sent via regular mail. This delay could be avoided by using a credit card BUT there would be a 6% service charge. To expedite matters I deposited $50 and accepted the service penalty. Previously I had found the companys customer service representative to be both courteous and efficient, and figured the simplest approach would be to make another call and find out exactly what to do next. I did , and was advised that I was given a free promotional 30-day trial and a $50 credit for buying programs, past performances, etc. This certainly met with my approval. I was further advised that there would be instructions sent via e-mail and to allow a day or two until Id be fully established as a member in good standing. I never did receive the e-mail instructions,Well see what happens next. Look for HH #30 to appear on or about May 31st.
