McANALLY SENDS TOUGH TANDEM OF ANTESPEND, LISTENING IN HOLLYWOOD OAKS
Antespend leads a solid group of seven 3-year-old
fillies, and figures to be an overwhelming favorite in
Saturday's $175,000 Hollywood Oaks.
"It's not every day you open the Form and find a race record like that," said assistant trainer Dan Landers.
The versatile Antespend has won eight of 11starts including a five-for-six record on the grass. If she has a weakness, it could be the main track, as she sports a three-for-five record on the dirt. Her two main track losses came back East, when she finished second to Escena in the Fantasy (Gr. II) at Oaklawn, and third behind Pike Place Dancer and Escena in the Kentucky Oaks (Gr. I) at Churchill Downs.
"I don't think she cared for those tracks out East," Landers said. "It's hard to fault her. She gives 100% every time. "
McAnally has won about every stakes on the Hollywood schedule, but will be aiming for his first Hollywood Oaks victory Saturday.
Listening is the McAnally second-stringer, but the Night Shift filly is a proven commodity and could be the second choice behind her stablemate. The rapidly developing filly captured the Princess (Gr. II) in her last, and has been perfect in three main track starts this year.
"She's improved a lot lately, but the first couple times she ran she showed us she could run a little bit," Landers said.
In other developments:
Ocean View worked three furlongs in :36 Thursday morning.
Post positions from the rail out for the 51st running of the Hollywood Oaks, to be run Saturday, July 13 at 1 1/8 miles: Little Gumpher, Brice Blanc, 121; Ocean View, Alex Solis, 121; Antespend, Chris Antley, 121; Listening, Chris McCarron, 121; Najecam, Pat Valenzuela, 121; Supercilious, Laffit Pincay Jr, 121, and Bella Capote, Yolanda Davila, 121.
JORY SENDS FLYING MARFA AND R FRIAR TUCK IN BEL
AIR
No matter how the race unfolds, trainer Ian Jory figures
he has all the bases covered with Flying Marfa and R Friar
Tuck in Sunday's $100,000 Bel Air Handicap.
"We've got the speed and the closer," Jory said. "So whatever way the race sets up, we've got it covered."
Flying Marfa could be the speed of the race. The 5-year-old gelding has spent the majority of his time on the grass as of late, but ran a solid third, finishing 5 3/4-lengths behind Dramatic Gold on the dirt in his last start.
"The owner prefers to run him on the grass, but he runs just as well on the dirt," Jory said. "He's run a couple of Beyer figures over 100 on the dirt."
R Friar Tuck, who captured the 1994 Affirmed Stakes (Gr. III), enters off a fifth-place finish May 17.
"He ran okay behind The Exeter Man in that race," he said. "But speed was holding very well all night."
In other developments:
Dernier Empereur worked three furlongs in :36 4/5 Thursday morning.
The Exeter Man drilled four furlongs in :48 2/5 for trainer Bobby Frankel.
Probables for the 27th running of the Bel Air Handicap, to be run Sunday, July 14 at 1 1/16 miles: Cleante, Chris McCarron; Dernier Empereur, Goncalino Almeida; Flying Marfa, Rene Douglas; R Friar Tuck, Brice Blanc, and Bon Point or The Exeter Man, Eddie Delahoussaye.
Possible: Dare And Go, no rider.

No. 4 for Saturday's Arlington Citation Challenge. The race
will be simulcast to Hollywood Park. Post time is 2:45 p.m.
Wagering at Hollywood Park will be commingled with
Arlington.
"I'm anxious to see Cigar run, I'm anxious to see my horse run," said Hofmans. "We'll be in contention turning for home, it's just a matter of how it shakes out from there."
Dramatic Gold and Eltish will fly to Chicago Thursday night.
Post positions from the rail out for the Citation Challenge: Honour And Glory, John Velazquez, 116, 8-1; Eltish, Eddie Delahoussaye, 118, 30-1; Dr. Banting, Garrett Gomez, 118, 30-1; Dramatic Gold, Corey Nakatani, 118, 30-1; Tenants Harbor, Robbie Albarado, 122, 30-1; Polar Expedition, Mark Guidry, 122, 30-1; Jambalaya Jazz, Aaron Gryder, 120, 30-1; Wild Syn, Cyril Goodwin, 118, 30-1; Unbridled's Song, Mike Smith, 118, 5-1, and Cigar, Jerry Bailey, 130, 1-5.
WINDSHARP READY TO TEST BOYS AGAIN IN CAESARS PALACE
TURF CHAMPIONSHIP
While most trainers prefer to keep their fillies and
mares racing against their own sex, the Wally Dollase-trained
Windsharp has made a habit of taking on the boys. Windsharp
will move out of her division for the fourth consecutive time
in the $700,000 Caesars Palace Turf Championship Sunday, July
21.
The Caesars will headline the Super Sunday card featuring six stakes worth over $1.6-million. First post is 12 noon.
"Sandpit will be very tough," said assistant trainer Craig Dollase. "But with Windsharp the distance is the key."
The Lear Fan mare defeated males going 1 1/2 miles in the San Luis Obispo (Gr. II) and the San Luis Rey (Gr. I), before settling for second behind Raintrap in the 1 3/4 mile San Juan Capistrano (Gr. I).
"The distance is right up her alley," said the younger Dollase. "The further she goes, the better. She has tremendous stamina."
In other developments:
Richard Mandella has supplemented Hollywood Turf Cup (Gr. I) runner-up Talloires to the Caesars Palace at a cost of $25,000.
Probables for the Caesars Palace Turf Championship, to be run Sunday, July 21 at 1 1/2 miles on the turf: Sandpit, Windsharp, Awad, Lassigny, Talloires.
TRACK GAL THE ONE TO BEAT IN $60,000 RICK LOZANO
FRIDAY NIGHT
Five weeks ago Track Gal looked very impressive
sprinting over the turf Friday night, as she captured the the
Cool Air Handicap June 10. She will try to duplicate the
effort in the $60,000-added Rick Lozano Friday night, but
this time she will be taking on the boys for trainer John
Sadler.
"We were looking at another race, but thought this was a good spot and called an audible," Sadler said. "She likes this turf course and we decided to give it a go."
After Friday night, Track Gal could be on the same schedule that led to wins in the Rancho Bernardo (Gr. III) and Ancient Title (Gr. III), and a start in the Breeders' Cup Sprint.
"This race gives us nice timing to the Rancho Bernardo (Aug. 10) which she won last year," Sadler said. "Then we'll go from there."
