BREEDERS' CUP EUROPEAN ENTRIES CONSPICUOUS BY THEIR ABSENCE

As few as seven or as many as 10 foreign horses are scheduled for the Breeders' Cup, to be run at Hollywood Park, in Inglewood, Calif., on Nov. 8. There will be no Europeans in the Juvenile, Juvenile Fillies, Distaff or Classic. The foreign contingent is led by probable Turf favorite Singspiel (IRE), who won the Dubai World Cup this year, as well as last November's Japan Cup. He was second in the 1996 Breeders' Cup Turf and was named North America's top turf male on the strength of a win in the Canadian International and his Breeders' Cup effort. Also expected for the Turf is Irish Derby winner Desert King (IRE), who was second to Singspiel (IRE) in the Group 1 Juddmonte International and runner-up to last year's Breeders' Cup Turf champion Pilsudski (IRE) in the Group 1 Irish Champion Stakes. Rajpoute (FR) will be making his first U.S. start for new owners Sid and Jenny Craig when he runs in the Turf. The three-year-old won the Group 2 Prix Niel on Sept. 14, beating Peintre Celebre, Europe's top horse and runaway winner of the Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe. Possible starters in the Turf are Majorien (GB), a French import who has won his last three races, and the well-traveled Oscar Schindler (IRE), who runs Sunday in the Group 1 Prix Royal-Oak at Longchamp. While trainer Kevin Prendergast is looking for an invitation to the Japan Cup, he will run in the Turf if none is forthcoming. Spinning World, second in last year's Breeders' Cup Mile returns for another try. Europe's top miler has won his past two races, both Group 1 events, and defeated last year's Arc de Triomphe winner Helissio (FR) by three lengths in his last race. A possible Mile entrant is Occupandiste (IRE), winner of three of his past four races. He took the Group 1 Prix Maurice de Gheest at Deauville on Aug. 10.

The top three finishers in the Oct. 5 Group 1 Prix de l'Abbaye de Longchamp are all planning a run in the Sprint. The five-furlong l'Abbaye is one of Europe's top sprints and Carmine Lake (IRE), Pas de Reponse and Royal Applause (GB) were separated by less than a length at the finish. Royal Applause (GB) was officially retired to stud after the l'Abbaye but will return for one more race.

Fourteen European horses ran in last year's Breeders' Cup at Woodbine; 19 started in 1993 at Santa Anita Park, the last time the Breeders' Cup was in California; and 12 raced in 1987, the last time the Breeders' Cup was at Hollywood Park. Europe's smallest contingent was in the first Breeders' Cup in 1984, nine; the most was 22 in 1994 at Churchill Downs.

COINCIDENCE STRIKES

Jeff Jacobs is one of the owners of the Cleveland Indians and Colonial Downs in New Kent County, Va. Jacobs Field, the Indians new ballpark, bears his family's name. Darren 'Dutch' Daulton, longtime member of the Philadelphia Phillies, recently hit a home run for his new team, the Florida Marlins, against the Indians in the World Series. Jeff Jacobs, no relation to the baseball family, trains horses. His starter in Saturday's Pennsylvania Sprint Championship Handicap at Philadelphia Park? Dutch Daulton.

CHINA PREPARES FOR LOTTERY AND HORSE RACING

China's Xia Hua News Agency announced Tuesday, Oct. 21, that the Beijing Dadu International Jockey Club (BDIJC), 80 percent of which is owned by the Chancellor Corporation of San Francisco, has been given permission to build a racetrack in Beijing, which would also offer electronic shooting, tennis courts, swimming pools, ballrooms, restaurants, health clubs, retail shops and lottery sales. Unlike other recent attempts to establish horse racing in the provinces of Guangzhou and Shenzhen, the state and local governments have given the BDIJC official approval to operate a horse racing project to internationally accepted standards. Chancellor will operate the facility.

The BDIJC is the only officially sanctioned track and jockey club in China with the ability to sell lottery tickets and to actively bet on horses. BDIJC's approvals include the right, along with television broadcasts, for off-track betting shops throughout Beijing. The track will be within a two-hour drive of 30 million people.

Chancellor will begin immediate construction of a 60,000-square-foot clubhouse for its lottery terminals and indoor facilities, with the track scheduled to be built in about three yeares. Peter Lynch, former head of the New York State Lottery, will run Chancellor's lottery operation.

MR. GEORGEFF RUNS ON GEORGEFF DAY AT HAWTHORNE

The answer: Georgeff, Georgeff, Mr. Georgeff. The question: Name a track announcer and two horses. Phil Georgeff, known as 'The Voice of Chicago Racing' after calling more than 96,000 races in his 34-year career, has been honored at Hawthorne Race Course in Stickney, Ill., with the Phil Georgeff Illinois Festival of Racing. Mr. Georgeff, a son of Georgeff, the horse, who was named for Georgeff, the announcer, will attempt to win Saturday's $100,000 High Alexander Stakes. Could be a good hunch bet.
