Texas Racing Notes From Mrs. Tittle

Letters from Mrs. Jill Tittle

Sun, 15 Oct 1995

Hello again!
Let me see, where was I? I have heard (second or perhaps third- hand) that the barns at Sam Houston are maxxed out--alot of the horses running at the meet are having to stay at nearby farms. Sounds like a good sign to me. Horsemen are encouraged by the fact that the purses were raised from last meet. It looks as if the fields are pretty full. All of this is encouraging.

Next weekend (Oct 22) is the TTBA mixed sale--breeding stock, weanlings, open yearlings, a few horses of racing age, a couple of stallions, and some stallion shares. Some of the weanilng sires are: Aloha Prospector, At Full Feather, Cahaba Gold, Cien Fuegos, Flying Granville, Garthorn, Hadif, Hyperborean, Kentucky Jazz, Mr. Leader, Native Tactics, Orbit Dancer, Our Hero, Passing Zone, Rare Brick, Salt Dome, Seattle Knight, Slewacide, Smile, State Dinner, Top Avenger, Walesa, Wayne's Crane, and Wolf Power. Covering sires include many of the above plus some others worth mentioning: Artichoke, Derby Wish, Fight Over, Hopeful Word, Idabel, Kerosene, Lockjaw, Marfa, Marked Tree, Naevus, Pancho Villa, Raja's Best Boy, Seattle Battle, Spend A Buck, Swiss Trick, Temperence Hill, Track Barron, and World Appeal. I expect this should be a good sale.I'll let you know.

Texas keeps on getting more good stallions. The latest to move here is Bet Twice. He will be standing at Dr. Day's Cedar Creek Farm in Brenham. McDermott Ranch has quite a line up, with Red Attack, Spend A Buck, Smile, and Naevus. Cedarcrest has a nice roster, too. The latest to move to Cedarcrest is Wayne's Crane. He'll be joining Joanie's Chief, State Dinner, North Prospect, and Pancho Villa. Valor Farm in Pilot Point has Marfa, Hadif, and Rare Brick. There are a number of other nice stallions which I haven't mentioned--these are mostly off the top of my head as far as relocations, etc.

I feel the need to plug Texas Champions Day. This will be held Saturday Night, Nov 18 at Sam Houston Race Park. The purses for the night total more than $230,000, with 6 stakes races running. There will be a "Pre-Race Party" held at the Wyndham Greenspointe Hotel on the 17th. They are the host hotel (713) 875-2222.

I hope this post find you well. I will let you know how the sale goes next weekend.

Til then... Jill
