The Running Horse is fortunate to have Jill Pflugheber return to writing for us. Previously she contributed to The Running Horse with her articles about Texas horse racing (see Texas Racing Notes in the Reading Room section).

Jill has changed her focus and is now writing about Polo at the Las Colinas Polo Club. We are looking forward to future installments.

Welcome back Jill!

I have spent most of my life acquainting myself with various equestrian endeavors. Through the years, I have had the good fortune to gain at least nodding familiarity with many of these. Through a recent change of life circumstance, I have had the opportunity to learn something about one sport I had really had no significant contact with before--polo.

Growing up in the northeast, had you asked me ten years ago what equestrian events I could expect to find in Texas, I would have reeled off a list of Quarter Horse-centered activities relating to stock handling, rodeos, gymkhanas, and stock-seat performance. After having lived here for some years, I learned there were plenty of opportunities for horsemen who pursued the many other activities that abound in the horse world for all breeds and types. Polo was not one I would have thought of a year or two ago. My experience in the past three months has convinced me otherwise.

The current polo season is on winter break at LCPC. Matches and tournaments can be expected to resume in May 2000. In the meantime, any questions about playing polo, buying or selling polo prospects, or joining LCPC can be handled by calling 214-373-8855 and leaving a message for LCPC manager Pam Mudra.
