WORLD'S BEST FILLIES AND MARES CLASH IN $700,000 MATRIARCH ON DEC. 1;

WINNER LIKELY TO EARN ECLIPSE AWARD HONORS AS TOP FEMALE ON TURF

Beverly D and Irish Champion Stakes winner Timarida is scheduled to run in Hollywood Park's $700,000 Matriarch (Gr. I) on the final day of the Inglewood track's sixth annual $2.15-million Turf Festival on Dec. 1. The addition of the multiple Grade/Group I winner adds to an already potent lineup of fillies and mares who will decide North America's Eclipse Award for top distaffer on turf.

"A representative from International Racing Bureau called us the other day and said that Timarida will be in town to run," said Hollywood Park's Racing Secretary Martin Panza. "The way the race is shaping up -- with six or seven of the world's best females on turf -- this could be one of the best Matriarchs yet. Just like the great Flawlessly-Super Staff-Kostroma confrontation in 1993, it looks like the Eclipse Award will be decided here at Hollywood Park."

In addition to Timarida, the Matriarch is under consideration for Admise, Alpride, Auriette, Bail Out Becky, Different, defending champ Duda, Tamise, Wandesta and Windsharp.

Yellow Ribbon winner Donna Viola, Keeneland's Queen Elizabeth II victress Memories of Silver and Hollywood Dream, who runs in the Group I Premio Roma in Rome on Saturday, will each consider the $30,000 supplement to run in The Matriarch. Late nominations are due Nov. 20.

"I've got a Grade I winner in Auriette and she's probably going to be 25-1," said trainer Marty Jones, who conditions the Santa Barbara and Gamely Handicap winner. "What a race! You'd think this was the Breeders' Cup."

Timarida, a 4-year-old filly bred in Ireland, was likely to go favored in Oak Tree's Yellow Ribbon Stakes on Nov. 3, but was forced to scratch from the Grade I event after developing a slight fever just prior to the 1 1/4-mile race.

"She's not sick, she's quite bright in herself," trainer John Oxx said at the time of Timarida's scratch. "She'll bounce back and recover pretty quickly."

H. H. Aga Khan's Timarida is expected to work over Hollywood Park's turf course on Thursday in preparation for her Matriarch engagement.

DID YOU KNOW?

Should Windsharp start in the $700,000 Matriarch as expected, it would be the 5-year-old daughter of Lear Fan's first start against females this year. She has faced male counterparts seven times in 1996, collecting a pair of wins in the San Luis Obispo Handicap and San Luis Rey Stakes at Santa Anita earlier this spring.

Most recently, Windsharp finished fifth in the $2-million Breeders' Cup Turf at Woodbine. The last time trainer Wally Dollase saddled his Kentucky-bred mare against her own sex, she galloped off to a nine-length win the $71,000 Reloy Stakes at Santa Anita on Dec. 29, 1995.
