BENEFICIAL INCREASES TURF HANDICAP FIELD TO 10
A field of 10 was entered for Monday's $500,000-guaranteed Hollywood Turf
Handicap, including William S. Kilroy's and Rebecca Phillips' Beneficial, who will be ridden by Corey Black in the Grade I event.
"We were considering (Friday's $75,000-added) the Bo Derek Stakes, and we still
haven't ruled that race out," trainer Neil Drysdale said. "But we're leaning heavily toward (the Turf Handicap)."
Beneficial, a 5-year-old Great Britain-bred by Top Ville, finished a close third going
10 furlongs against Group 3 competition in his last two starts in England, and before that he won the Group 3 Tennants Scottish Classic at 1 1/4 miles. Since shipping to the United States, Beneficial has raced four times with his best showing a third to Paradise Creek in the Grade I Washington D. C. International at Laurel.
In other Turf Handicap developments:
Vaudeville arrived safely at Eddie Gregson's barn and galloped on the main
track Saturday. "He looks like a million bucks," said Gregson, adding that trainer Fordell Fierce was due to arrive from Northern California Sunday.
Trainer Rodney Rash, after entering Celtic Arms, paused in front of the racing
office and said Gary Tanaka's French-bred colt is as ready as can be. "We're cautiously optimistic," he said. "The horse still has to prove himself in this country, but he's a nice horse and he's trained very well. One thing's for sure, the distance isn't a problem. He's a Group 1 winner at 1 1/2 miles in France."
Sal Gonzalez Jr., on picking up the mount on longshot Cocooning: "I'm happy
because there's not many opportunities for me in the big races. You never know, we're in the race, and this horse, he doesn't seem to care about class. He just goes out and runs his race every time."
Talloires blew out three furlongs on a fast main track in :34 4/5.
The field for the 27th Turf Handicap, to be decided at 1 1/4 miles: Del Mar
Dennis, Chris Antley, 118; Savinio, Chris McCarron, 117; Earl of Barking, G. F. Almeida, 115; Beneficial, Corey Black, 113; Talloires, Kent Desormeaux, 113; Wandesta, Pat Day, 114; Cocooning, Sal Gonzalez Jr., 113; Vaudeville, Gary Stevens, 119; Celtic Arms, Eddie Delahoussaye, 120, and Sandpit, Corey Nakatani, 122.

FRANKEL MAY RUN TWO IN CINEMA HANDICAP
Bobby Frankel, the meet's leading trainer through Friday with 12 wins, said he
might run both Hidden Source and newcomer Brynt Irion in the $100,000-added Cinema Handicap on June 3.
Juddmonte Farms' Hidden Source finished fourth in his last two starts, the Grade
II Lexington Stakes at Keeneland and the Grade III Will Rogers Breeders' Cup Handicap at Hollywood.
John Chandler's Brynt Irion has raced exclusively in France, where his best was a
second in the listed Prix St. Roman last Nov. 18 at Evry.
Probables for the $100,000-added Cinema Handicap, a Grade III race to be run at
1 1/8 miles on turf: Brynt Irion (Corey Black or Corey Nakatani); Fine N' Majestic (Gary Stevens); Hidden Source (Black or Nakatani); In Character (Chris Antley); Longliner, Chris McCarron; On Target (Alex Solis) and Via Lombardia (Eddie Delahoussaye).

MORGANA TO TAKE HER SHOT IN GAMELY
Robert E. Sangster's Morgana, a good second to Possibly Perfect in the Grade II
Wilshire Handicap, is probable for the $150,000-added Gamely Handicap (Gr. I) on June 4, trainer Gary Jones said.
Morgana worked four furlongs in :49 3/5 on the turf course Friday and Jones said
the 4-year-old daughter of El Gran Senor "more than likely" will line up for a rematch with Possibly Perfect in the 1 1/8-mile Gamely.
Jones won the 1980 Gamely with Wishing Well.
Probables for the 29th running of the Gamely Handicap: Aube Indienne (Chris
McCarron), Lady Affirmed (Gary Stevens), Morgana (Eddie Delahoussaye) and Possibly Perfect (Kent Desormeaux).
Possible: Cabo Queen (no rider) and Wende (no rider).

SINGING THE PRAISES OF GARY STEVENS
Trainer Sandy Shulman doesn't need to be sold on jockey Gary Stevens.
The track's second leading trainer with 11 victories through Friday, Shulman said
he marveled at the ride hung up by Stevens aboard the Shulman-trained Garrick ($10.60) in Friday's sixth race, a $62,000-$55,000 claiming event at one mile on turf.
"Garrick's victory is a true testimonial of how great a rider Gary Stevens is,"
Shulman said. "He placed a horse that's usually close to the lead in the perfect spot, as he sensed the pace was quick. Then, he waited until exactly the right moment to move, and he finished so strongly it's just incredible.
"And remember, this was a claiming race, and he rode with the same intensity and
skill as if it were a graded stakes race. That's the mark of a professional."

SHULMAN SITTING PRETTY FOR BO DEREK STAKES
Sandy Shulman hopes his schmoozing with the stars continues at Hollywood Park
next week.
The 58-year-old trainer won last Friday night's fifth race with Ron Charles' Deer
Hunt, and was thrilled to receive the winning trophy from actress Dyan Cannon.
But this Friday night, the Pittsburgh native, who now resides in Arcadia, is going
for a Perfect 10 in the $75,000-added Bo Derek Stakes.
The race is named for the legendary beauty who made her mark in the movie "10"
and Shulman plans to run Charles' and the Clear Valley Stable's Jahafil in the race.
"She's definitely good-looking," Shulman said of Derek. "She was great in the
movie with that little comedian (Dudley Moore). Who can forget that Bolero' scene with her and Dudley? It would be quite a parlay if we were to win the Bo Derek a week after winning a race that Dyan Cannon presented the trophy to us."
The Bo Derek Stakes is carded in Hollywood Park's second condition book as "a
perfect 10' furlongs on the turf."
Post time, of course, is "10."

FINISH LINES: Fly'n J. Bryan, winner of the 1994 San Vicente Breeders' Cup Stakes, was entered in Saturday's $75,000-added Roseben Handicap at Belmont Park . . . Even though she was entered in an allowance race Saturday, trainer Barry Abrams hadn't ruled out running Fondly Remembered in the $150,000-added Gamely Handicap (Gr. I) on June 4. "But she'd have to win Saturday to even be considered," he said. "If she can't win that race, she has no business in the Gamely." . . . Best Pal worked one mile in 1:37 3/5, handily, on a fast main track Saturday in preparation for the $250,000-added Californian (Gr. I) June 11. Working from the 7/8ths pole, Best Pal got five furlongs in 1:01 and seven furlongs in 1:25 . . .Top Rung breezed three furlongs Saturday at Santa Anita in preparation for Sunday's $100,000-added Hawthorne Handicap (Gr.
