The Newest Thoroughbred Legend Is the Little Horse That Could - John Henry

Lexington, KY-July 16, 2001-Eclipse Press, the book publishing division of The Blood-Horse, Inc., announces the publication of "John Henry", the tenth book in the Thoroughbred Legends series.

Only by dint of their determination and will does the story of John Henry, the horse, compare with that of the legendary "steel-drivin' man" because stature-wise, there was no comparison. The equine John Henry was small, plain, bad-tempered, and had bad knees. He was the horse no one wanted, passing from owner to owner until Sam Rubin, a man who knew nothing about horses, purchased him for $25,000. Sent to California-based trainer Ron McAnally, John Henry blossomed and set the racing world on its ear with his gutsy, determined performances.

John Henry raced until the incredible age of nine, was voted Horse of the Year twice, including his nine-year-old year, and was the all-time leading money-earner when he retired in 1984 with more than $6 million. John Henry lives at the Kentucky Horse Park near Lexington where he is visited by his many fans.

In "John Henry", award-winning author Steve Haskin guides the reader through the joyful highs, heartbreaking lows, and pure twists of fate that followed this unassuming little gelding on his journey to becoming one of horse racing's most beloved and enduring champions.
